Portugal's accession to the European Economic Community, which took place in 1986, refocused the economic interest of the country in the European market. Their integration in a new context of free movement of goods accompanied by increasing harmonization supported on technical regulations and compliance requirements, stressed the importance of activity of laboratorie.

This new reality soon showed the need to create an organization that would allow to join the laboratories in the network, allowing promote dialogue to strengthen the technical and economic level, promote their capabilities and skills and to establish conditions for their competitiveness in this demanding market.

This same purpose at European level, was the origin of the creation of EUROLAB, which occurred on April 27, 1990, with the participation of Portugal by the Portuguese Quality Institute [IPQ].

Since then, there was the need to create in the country, an entity capable of representing the Portuguese laboratories in EUROLAB, and IPQ promoted a public and private laboratories Forum, accredited or interested in accreditation for setting up an association of laboratories, whose deed took place on May 9, 1991, with the appointment of RELACRE - accredited laboratories Association of Portugal, which joined 21 entities accredited laboratories.

Throughout its existence the RELACRE has based its action to fulfill this important mission to support and represent the community laboratories, adjusting its playing field to the growing needs presented by the laboratories, aware of their role in society.
